October 18 ISC message to the community

Good evening Vikings,

I'm writing to share an exciting update. We want to ensure the Paly bell schedule is optimized for learning and well-being, while still meeting the needs of the Paly community. Last year we started the process of updating the schedule and made adjustments to meet state requirements. Now, a new committee, the Innovative Schedule Committee (ISC), is focused on finalizing the bell schedule.

The Innovative Schedule Committee (ISC)
The committee is comprised of 5 students, 5 parents, and 9 Paly team members (6 teachers, 2 staff members and myself). We are committed to educating ourselves about bell schedules and the implications of changes. Together, we will work towards a consensus on the optimal schedule for next school year. We know changes have impacts to people’s daily lives so it will be a several month process before we have a final proposal. For details and the latest information regarding our process, please click here or go to http://www.paly.net/isc

The Approach
Our goal is to understand the opportunities for enhancing Paly’s learning environment through the schedule. From block schedules, to class times, to athletics, we are engaging with experts and considering the available research. We will also speak with other schools to understand the real life experiences bell schedule changes had for their schools.

Be part of the conversation
Most importantly, we need to hear from the Paly community. The committee will invite students, staff and parents to express their opinions, concerns, and suggestions. If you would like to volunteer to be part of the discussion, please let us know. Also, we will send out emails when we host discussion sessions. The more informed we are by each of you, the better the result. For questions or comments, please contact us at palyisc@pausd.org

What's Next
Look for invitations for representatives from across our diverse communities over the next several months. We want to meet with you to listen to what’s working, what’s not working, and what would make our schedule better. We will keep you posted on our work and will let you know what we are hearing.

Good things take time, which is why we thank you for your patience and support.

With gratitude,

Kim Diorio
Principal
